The Last Lord of Paradise by Vivian Lemay is a self published short story originally published in 2011.
This is a historical novella. The focus of this first part of a continuing saga, on Jeanne and Anton.

Jeanne, at the ripe old age of sixteen is allowed to marry Anton before he goes off to war. But once the war is ended, Anton does not return home. He is gone for nine long years. At last, Jeanne is reunited with Anton, and at first it was like the years had melted away. Anton is the leader of a small community and he hopes he and Jeanne will have be able to begin a family. But, Jeanne learns some disturbing things about her husband and is beginning to hear her name on the wind at odd moments.

This idea of a continuing a saga in parts is a good idea. I like the concept. There is a very vivid and atmospheric quality to the writing that opens up the minds eye and we are find ourselves in the mist hearing Jeanne's name being called out.
A feeling that something isn't right with Anton prevails. Why didn't he come for his young wife after the war? Why has he started up this township?
A series of events finally opens Anton's eyes, but by this time will it be too late?
This book is historical fiction, but also has a strong paranormal element to it as well.
I enjoyed the author's writing style and I am interested in continuing with the series. It's very different and unique, the author certainly has a good imagination.
Over all a good solid A.

This was an interesting book for me to read. I must admit I don't read many books on my kindle but I thought I would give this one a try. This is the story of a woman who marries a man and then does not see him for nine years as he is sent off to war in France. The next thing we know is she gets a letter asking her to come live with him in Canada. When she gets there she is amazed by what she finds. The author did a very good job with descriptions in this book, I felt as if I could see everything that her husband had accomplished as well the beautiful landscapes. The way the characters were developed in this story was also done in a very good manner, you could easily imagine them as real people. Even though this was a short story it packed quite the punch. I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. I give this book three stars
Jeanne, a young french girl, leaves her father's home to be with her husband, Anton in a whole new land, where he is the pillar of the french community. Did she make the right decision to leave her father, to give up all that she knows and loves, to go with Anton, a man she calls her husband but barely knows?

The Last Lord of Paradise, which is the first book in this family saga series, is an engrossing, tragic tale that will pull you in and leave you wanting to know more about how the "sins of the father" will play out and affect future generations.

This is Book One in a six book series that spans the descendants of Anton and Jeanne. It's a very quick read and filled with vivid details. It had a twist ending that was unique and left me surprised. The characters were interesting and the plot kept me intrigued.

Jeanne Marguise married Anton Gauchere and he went to war for France. 9 years later he had not returned but she had received a letter to go to his secret Paradis and join him there. He was busy planting and clearing land in this Canadian land.
She traveled with Monsieur Lavelle on his boat. She was amazed at what was waiting for her. Very detailed descriptions of the landscape, knowing the 5 families were there helping to make this a good self-sustaining settlement.
They were all introduced to Jeanne and they are free of the British and can serve God in their own way. She believes the story Anton tells her of what he did after the war-why he never returned to her.
Love to hear of all they do to put food on the table, from the planting of the seeds to caring for the plants...
She is still hearing the whispers and is not sure why or what they mean yet.
She confides in Marie who has 10 sons and asks her for help in getting pregnant. She prepares a tea and gives her the instructions on how to drink it and when.
Wheat harvesting and other chores keep her busy as her neighbors while Anton works on the windmill for the settlement, what an amazing task and what he used. The end result is a male son but the settlement is in turmoil over how it all happened...
Great first book of a series.
This was a quick read. I was immediately pulled into Jeanne's story as she moves from her comfortable home in France to the settlement that her husband has founded. It is a tough life and a tragic story. This is the beginning of a family saga that follows six generations and I was left wondering if there is hope in the future generations, or if they will follow the same pattern. The story had a bit of a supernatural edge and I wonder if it was due to the superstitious nature of the people or if there was something more to it. This was a complete story on its own, though there are plenty of questions to explore in future books. I recommend this, especially if you are a fan of historical fiction.

This was a very fast read (novella) which I had to gobble in one sitting because a compelling eeriness pulled me on. As a piece of historical fiction, I found it well-drawn. The interaction between the various social and cultural groups (marquise, seigneur, habitant, voyageur, native) felt realistic to the time. I loved the interplay of the habitants' dependence on and admiration of their seigneur contrasted with the shrewd insight of the local "witch" and the blacksmith. LeMay weaves fantastic characterization and subtlety into this story. She made me truly care about the characters, and part of the reason I couldn't stop turning pages was due to the haunting dread I felt coming. I had to know how it would turn out. this author is new to me, and I like her writing style and voice. I'll definitely read the rest of the series.
