I really liked this book, it didn't have all the bad language, or erotic bedroom scenes. That's a big plus for me. Also, for me, I love stories where there is a pregnancy involved and to see how the story line involves. May sound weird, but, for me I just like those stories.
Because I love everything Melody Anne writes. While trying to hold it together caring for her orphaned niece and nephew. A stranger shows up at her door. It's been a year since Whitney's sister and brother in law were kill in a car wreck. The children had no one else but Whitney until the knock on her door upends her new life as well as the life of her new charges. Enter a rich, uptight, ass of an Uncle no one knew the kids had, demanding that Whitney bring the children to meet their paternal Grandfather. I love Whitney's upbeat attitude and seeing the change from the angry nephew, and the brooding Uncle. She also has a self preservation wish. Can Whitney break through the uptight, rude, snobby, workaholic Uncle? Will she loose the children to the wealth of their Grandfather..... sigh... A sweet Melody Anne story of breaking down barriers. I recommend this book if you like an HEA.
There were times in this book I really wanted to slap Jackson! I kept having to remind myself that he was a fictional character and not real! However, even though he could be a real jerk, there was something so endearing about him as well. You just had to look beyond his jumbled way of thinking and find the true man he was down inside. He and Alyssa started out as a one-night stand but she's someone he can't stop thinking about. When she turns up in his hometown, working at the bar his father just bought he's more than ready to pick up where they left off, but Alyssa' s pregnant and given his feelings on love and commitment, which he made very clear during their one night together, the last thing she wants to do is tell him the child is his. When he refuses to go away, doing his best to convince her to be what amounts to nothing more than his mistress, she's determined to fight him at every turn. In the meantime, the two of them begin to grow closer to not only each other but their respective families as well. When tragedy strikes and the truth comes out, Jackson is forced to look at things in a whole new light if he truly wants a future with Alyssa. While I got frustrated with Jackson, actually not liking him at first for his selfish attitude, the book ended up being quite enjoyable to read. The most redeeming qualities were Jackson's brothers, Cam and Spence, who seemed to recognize Jackson's feelings for Alyssa before he did. I found myself wanting to read more about them before I got to the end of their brother's story. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
3.5 stars

Her Unexpected Hero was my first time reading a full length book by Melody Anne, I did read a novella by her in the Baby It's Cold Outside Anthology and it turns out I have several of her books in my TBR waiting for me on my so I know I will be reading more from this author in the future. While this is a new series, I am going to assume (the vibe I got from reading this book) that this is a spin-off of another series. While I enjoyed this book as a new series and a standalone there were times I felt like I was missing out on some pieces of the puzzle, they were few things that made me wonder if I should go back and read her Anderson series (which I most likely will).

Her Unexpected Hero was different than I was expecting. Melody Anne has crafted a story that you think is leading in one direction and then jumps the rails and really takes you on a new path! When Jackson and Alyssa met there was a spark, chemistry and some heat! Melody Anne did a great job pulling you into the story, from the emotional prologue and then right into the meeting of Alyssa and Jackson at the airport. Alyssa was a tough sale for me, she had just had the carpet pulled from beneath her, losing everything and having to go back to living with her parents. She was closed off, bitter and wanting to forget what she was forced to leave behind. A fresh start was what she planned, then Jackson messed it all up (in a good way). Jackson, I will admit, I liked right away. He was surly, a bit fussy and hot under the collar. Then we get to see him evolve and change during the story. Melody Anne did a great job with her characters, I loved the family ties with Jackson and his family and the sense of community that she portrayed in that small Montana town.

As the story unfolded there were a few things that gave me pause (I have a few hang ups in my picky reader's mind that I couldn't get over, but no spoilers) and took me out of the story. Alyssa was very wishy-washy and came off as a bit of a spoiled brat. She didn't want Jackson, but she was upset when he wasn't there giving her attention and she made pretty silly choices. Her character went through a lot during this book, things got pretty dramatic and a bit far fetched for me. Jackson on the other hand became a whole new person from the surly man we meet at the airport, but I was ok with that. He saw what he wanted, recognized it and went after it. He was way more patient (and a bit blind) with Alyssa than many would be. His turnaround did seem sudden, but somehow it worked. I liked the idea that your whole life could change by sitting next to someone on a plane... ah, fate!

Her Unexpected Hero was definitely an interesting read. While I wasn't a fan of some the plot points and the dramatic happenings, it was a solid read and I will be interested to read the next installment. If you like your romance with drama and sizzle then this is a great book to pick up and read tonight!
I was torn between one and two stars. I went with one since it was one of the worse I've read from this author.

Hated the heroine. What a liar. At some point not telling the man he is about to be a father is just a character defect. I have read many of the books by this author, and she does tend to have week heroines. They lie, they omit, they play hard to get until I just want more for the hero of the book. They cry, they whine, they worry and I wonder why the heroes even want these women.

Unfortunately, this was another one of those unlikable leading ladies.
